Pronunciation Course for Teachers

Pronunciation Course for Teachers: putting theory into daily classroom practice

This practical course on pronunciation intends to develop participants' understanding of  the IPA (International Phonemic Alphabet) and awareness of WHERE & HOW sounds are made. You will be exposed to new, creative and engaging ways to use the IPA phonemic chart based on Adrian Underhill's  approach. The course aims to provide teachers with a wide repertoire of techniques and hands-on activities that will make pronunciation a successful and enjoyable focus in their classes. Activities with songs, videos and games will be shared.
It's a course for Brazilian teachers of EFL, who want to develop their own pronunciation and also improve the way they teach it.

Module I
1. IPA charts and phonemic symbols
2. Dictionaries
3. British and American English
4. Vowel and Diphthong Sounds
5. The role of L1 


Module II
1. Spelling and Pronunciation
2. The schwá sound /ə/
3. Number of syllables
4. Silent letters
5. Word Stress

Module III
1. Consonant Sounds
2. Voiced and Unvoiced Sounds
3. -s endings and -ed endings: rules and practice

Thelma Marques, has many years' experience in teaching EFL to children, young adults and adults in Brazil and overseas. She holds a B.A. in Languages,  Cambridge CPE, CELTA  and YL Ext to CELTA certificates and has also worked as a Cambridge Examiner. She is an innovative and dynamic teacher, member of the Braz-Tesol Pronunciation SIG and has been giving a number of workshops and in the field of pronunciation for more than 20 years. She works as an online tutor and is always looking for opportunities to develop professionally. Her latests CPD courses include:  "Successful Pronunciation Learning and Teaching", with Adrian Underhill, University of Kent, UK (2012); "English Pronunciation for Overseas-Born Professionals", The University of Sydney, AU (2015); "Pronunciation Skills Workshop", with Marina Pearce and Glenice Aiken, University of New South Wales, AU (2016); and "Pronunciation for Teachers", an online course, with T. Veigga and Mark Hancock (2018). Having lived and taught in Australia for three years, she is now living in Valencia, Spain.
